Rocky Horror remake hits rocky road
by Nick Murphie
The 30th anniversary remake of cult musical Rocky Horror Picture Show that was slated to go into production at Fox Studios, Sydney, next month has been put on hold.
The telemovie remake, to be titled Rocky Horror Birthday Show, was supposed to go into production in October under the direction of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert's Stephan Elliott.
A Fox World spokesperson could not give a reason for the film's delay. The production was to have originally started this month, but rumours of casting difficulties were attributed to its delay to October. The spokesperson said the project had not been cancelled, "just shelved for a while".
However, the project was scheduled to form part of the Fox network's February 2003 line-up to tie in with the anniversary of the original stage show.
The musical about cross-dressing scientist Frank N Furter, who creates his perfect man on the night his home is invaded by a wholesome, straight-laced couple, was to become a new two-hour telemovie in a collaboration between the Fox network and Fox TV Studios. Fox World was co-ordinating the Australian shoot.
Rocky creator Richard O'Brien, who also starred in the 1975 20th
Century Fox film, said he was coming to Australia in November to act as advisor on the project and would include original songs in the remake.
