I'm going to be out of town after tomorrow night, and I'll be getting back on Sunday. Archon ahoy, wh00t!
I'm not cutting this because it's just too damn important. If that bothers you, hit downspace a few times and deal.

Legalizing Torture

The Republican leadership of Congress is attempting to legalize extraordinary rendition. "Extraordinary rendition" is the euphemism we use for sending terrorism suspects to countries that practice torture for interrogation. As one intelligence official described it in the Washington Post, "We don't kick the sh*t out of them. We send them to other countries so they can kick the sh*t out of them.”

The best known example of this is the case of Maher Arar. Arar, a Canadian citizen, was deported to Syria from JFK airport. In Syria he was beaten with electrical cables for two weeks, and then imprisoned in an underground cell for the better part of a year. Arar is probably innocent of any connection to terrorism.

People, it's this kind of bullshit that makes this election so vitally important. Get off your lazy asses and register to vote if you haven't already, and get out there come November 2nd and help me vote these bastards out. The neo-conservative element in our national government has got to go.

"I'm talking to Republicans, conservatives and libertarians as well as to Democrats and liberals. I know that you are more decent than this, and that you do not approve of torture. Please prove me right, and do something about it. Republicans are the majority in Congress, and they are much more likely to listen to you than to any Democrat. The press is much more likely to report on the story if liberal and conservative blogs both cover it." (again quoting from Obsidian Wings)

I know that my readers and my friends will help me spread the word about this. This a thousand times more important than some asinine smoke and mirrors CBS records pseudo-scandal. This cuts right to the heart of everything we're supposed to be about as a country. Please don't let me down, people. For that matter, please don't let our country down. Help me do something about this.

As an added fillip, check out this pretty thunderclap piece of news that should give any Republican worthy of the name pause to think about where their party is going.

Dwight Eisenhower's son leaves GOP and endorses Kerry.

Take that in for a second, if you will. The son of one of the conservative icons and the very epitome of true compassionate conservatism has gotten utterly sickened by what's become of the Republican party.

"Recent developments indicate that the current Republican Party leadership has confused confident leadership with hubris and arrogance," he wrote.

"Senator Kerry, in whom I am willing to place my trust, has demonstrated that he is courageous, sober, competent, and concerned with fighting the dangers associated with the widening socio-economic gap in this country," he concluded.

Tick tock, George. Tick tock.
