As if I needed any more reason to hold this administration in utter contempt

Antiwar Sermon Brings IRS Warning

The Internal Revenue Service has warned one of Southern California's largest and most liberal churches that it is at risk of losing its tax-exempt status because of an antiwar sermon two days before the 2004 presidential election.

I never realized Conan O'Brien was such a right-wing fanatic.

"They said if there was a confession of wrongdoing, they would not proceed to the exam stage. They would be willing not to revoke tax-exempt status if the church admitted intervening in an election."

um, wow.

So let's see if I have this straight - if they agree they did what the IRS said they did to prompt this investigation then they'll let it go...?

Then what's the point, exactly??

Yes that's a rhetorical question...

The solution is really quite simple. Treat all religious organizations the same as any other organizations. No tax exemptions for any business: charitable, religious or otherwise. This way, we don't have to play foolish games like "lose your tax exemption" or "who's a church?"

What about those clowns asking for our church directories?
We actually had soneone telling us from the pulpit at church *not* to give them for political purposes and that the list would be considered a donation in kind because a list of people has a market value.

Would this happen to the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) ?? Being pacifist consciencious objectors is a basic tenet of their faith. They are going to get anti-war from the pulpit, in a programmed Meeting, anyway.

Asshats!

Someone needs to tell the IRS about the Catholic Archdiocese here in Boston, which has been *blatantly* pushing its members to support the anti-gay marriage initiative being voted on by the state legislature.

That response is typical of this Administrations two-faced behaviour with regard to religion.

OH my GODDESS!!!! See this is what happens when the STATE thinks it can mess with the CHURCH (i.e. religion) and vice versa.......what a crock of shit! Looks like Big Brother is peeking through the curtains, folks......tighten your metaphorical belts...its gonna be a bumpy ride!!!
