How can I tell or find out which USB ports on my machine are the high speed ones?

the easiest way is just to plug a USB device that uses 2.0 into your system. If the connection is not 2.0 the computer will complain about it. ;-)

Well, that too. However, there was no mention of him having a 2.0 device to plug in, so I figured he might not have one yet. :)
