Twenty years ago today, El Santo, the most famous wrestler in the history of Mexico, died of a heart attack at age 67. Santo (real name Rodolfo Guzman Huerta), in addition to his wrestling fame, crossed over into movies, starring in over 50 action/horror films. Santo was never seen without his mask on, and in fact was buried in the silver hood that he made famous. Santo's in-ring career lasted 48 years, ending in 1982.

I remember seeing El Santo wrestle in Ciudad Juarez once when I was a child. I think it was around 1975, I must have been around 8. The Sunday afternoon wrestling matches cost 50 cents, it was always opened with midget wrestling before the big matches.

I remember:

The "Palomitas" with chile powder on them ( spicy popcorn) , the ladies selling homemade "tortas de aguacate" (guacamole sandwiches).
Everyone had a wonderful time watching the spectacle. My drunk uncles laughing. The squeaky folding chairs.

They would announce his entrance, and the place would go nuts. He was older by then, his movie popularity had waned, but his legend still lived on.The highlight of his matches was always the question, "would someone remove the mask?" They never did.

Someday I'd like to write and direct a movie about El Santo.

If you do, I swear by all that is holy, good and true I will fly down to be in the movie or help with it. I know it might sound goofy for a non-Latino to say this, but Santo was and is one of my great heroes.

I'd be deliriously happy to even meet Hijo Del Santo. Were I you, I'd do a synopsis first so you can have something to show his family. No sense busting your arse to write a screenplay if they don't want the movie made.
