Northwest Passage

Chorus:

Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.

Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died;
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones.

Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain.

And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea.

How then am I so different from the first men through this way?
Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away.
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again.

Unpublished additional verse:

And if should be I come again to loved ones left at home,
Put the journals on the mantle, shake the frost out of my bones,
Making memories of the passage, only memories after all,
And hardships there the hardest to recall.

(Yes, I know it's a conflicting mental image. Shurrup. Tip o' the hat to the ever delectable [livejournal.com profile] darkisst for the news although I went to another source for confirmation.)

Bauhaus Return With Go Away White

"Bauhaus have recorded their first album in 25 years and on March 10th 2008, the band will release the record through their new home at Cooking Vinyl."
This morning, Herself had to have all four tires replaced on the car to the tune of nearly four hundred dollars. Just now, I find out the main Radio Nosferatu feed is off the air until Monday because of supposed non-payment which is a complete crock and I can prove it. I've been having qualms about using Liquid Compass anyway, because the company prez is a RIAA Reporter and that sticks in my craw. But for now, they're the only game in town as far as I can tell.

Anyway, the household is down a thousand dollars in the space of two days after the heater repair. Yeah, Christmas is going to just a tad slim this year. Oy. Likewise gevalt.
ANYhoo, the show is a'rolling, folks. Go here if you need How To help and come join your ol' Doc on Undernet IRC in #rf-callahans.
