I've seen no interface that tries to extend the (E)IDE busses outside the case so the external would be on firewire, USB or Ethernet. Different hardware, drivers generally written for scalability. No problem expected.
If it's SCSI just make sure both ends of the chain are terminated and that the on-card termination is not being used. A bit more likely to flake out, but still likely to work.
I've NOT had good luck with external drives connected to the parallel port... but it doesn't sound like anything you'd have attached to this machine would be of that generation.
