Student Arrested For Terroristic Threatening Says Incident A Misunderstanding

"A George Rogers Clark High School junior arrested Tuesday for making terrorist threats told LEX 18 News Thursday that the "writings" that got him arrested are being taken out of context.

Winchester police say William Poole, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Investigators say they discovered materials at Poole's home that outline possible acts of violence aimed at students, teachers, and police.

Poole told LEX 18 that the whole incident is a big misunderstanding. He claims that what his grandparents found in his journal and turned into police was a short story he wrote for English class.

"My story is based on fiction," said Poole, who faces a second-degree felony terrorist threatening charge. "It's a fake story. I made it up. I've been working on one of my short stories, (and) the short story they found was about zombies. Yes, it did say a high school. It was about a high school over ran by zombies."

Even so, police say the nature of the story makes it a felony. "Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it's a felony in the state of Kentucky," said Winchester Police detective Steven Caudill.

Poole disputes that he was threatening anyone.

"It didn't mention nobody who lives in Clark County, didn't mention (George Rogers Clark High School), didn't mention no principal or cops, nothing,"
said Poole. "Half the people at high school know me. They know I'm not that stupid, that crazy."

On Thursday, a judge raised Poole's bond from one to five thousand dollars after prosecutors requested it, citing the seriousness of the charge.

Poole is being held at the Clark County Detention Center."

Robert Heinlein got it just wrong. These aren't The Crazy Years. These are The Utterly Barking Mad Years.

Cripes, it's getting kripping insane when under the Reign of the Shrub a kid can be put away for writing a friggin' story. This really pisses me off. May I please put a link to this from [livejournal.com profile] dark_syndicate?

This isn't new to the Reign of the Shrub. Brian Dalton of Ohio was convicted (on child pornography charges) in 1998 for writing some disgusting stories in his private diaries. That was arguably worse than the Poole case, since Dalton's work wasn't shared by him with anyone else.

In any event, one either supports free expression, or one doesn't. The fact that there even is such a crime as "terroristic threats" demonstrates that most people really don't.

Jeez. Anything a person does in their own space and their own time (especially if it isn't to be shared with others) should be their own kripping beeswax.

Damn stupid paranoid oligarchy.

FWIW, Brian Dalton's writings weren't just fictional stories with no basis in reality. They named specific people (relatives of his) that he wanted to sexually assault. He had previously been convicted on sexual assault (or attempted), so, it's not like this was an out of the blue thing.

What I wanna know is where the fuck they think he's going to get zombies. Carried to its logical extension, this piece of idiocymeans that the movie Indepencence Day, the classic George pal War of the Worlds, and about half the action movies ever produced by Hollywood are "terroristic threats".

Hey, France, we have a minor correction. Our President isn't a mere idiot, he's a gibbering lunatic.

This shit worries me .... I see the US sliding faster and faster toward being a police state. And it's not just the political right pushing it, either, it's ALL of the lying bastards. In all of Congress, there is only one consistent, reliable pro-freedom vote.

Agreed. Out of curiosity, if I may ask, who do you think is that consistent, reliable pro-freedom vote? My choice would be Texas congressman Ron Paul (nominally a Republican).

government incompetence doesnt even begin to cover this crap

probably some Zero Tolerance policy garbage
Zero Tolerance is equal to Zero Competence on the part of the administrators
involved, theres flat out no excuse for this beyond they dont have a fucking clue beyond doing whats immediately convenient instead of using what supposedly they were given for a brain. theres no excuse for Zero Tolerance policies in the first place, they need to be stamped down hard and permaently, and the administrators responsible for this garbage need to be fired for gross incompetence

Hell, I had a whole comic strip that my best friend and I wrote and drew centering on our heroic escapades in destroying a hated teacher. And who hasn't drawn teacher torture devices (like the game Mousetrap, only bloodier)? Such things allowed us to let off a little steam in a creative and non-violent fashion. But these days you gotta love Big Brother as well.

When we lived in Kentucky recently my son Joe wrote a story in school... one based off of the school shootings in Co...
it was a fictional story about a shy kid that was picked on and went in and went nuts and shot a ton of people at school.
Needless to say they pulled him in and me and tried to say that he was that shy kid etc etc etc..
I explained that the teacher REQUESTED they write something based in the news and make it fictional... they fucked with him for months about it but that was about it..
I guess he's lucky they didn't arrest him eh?
I had no idea about that 'law' in KY
