Questions of strategy

The following is about the whole Iraqi Situation. If you're tired of hearing about the damned thing, then I advise you to make like Lee nails and press on. *snerk*

I cannot honestly say I am proud of being an American. I can say I'm very glad to be an American, but that's neither here nor there. I refuse to be proud of being part of any country that produces both Wayne Newtown and Britney Spears. I also refuse to debate with anyone about it, and anyone who tries will be ignored or made fun of in my journal, depending on my mood.
War is a dirty, nasty, ugly, repulsive business. Those who glory in war, who revel in war, are as much an aberration as any you can name. Be damned with such and all they stand for. For what they are glorying in is not the very necessary eventuality of defense. They are in it for the mere joy of the kill, the sheer adrenaline rush of watching another human being die at their hand. The whys, the wherefores do not matter to them. They merely need an excuse, and they're marching off to glory, tra la la la la.
Having said that, I will agree with the post behind that link in that this is something that should have been finished many years ago. Saddam Hussein is a repulsive little toad of a man with all the wit, charm and grace of an Alsatian dog after a headswap operation, to borrow a phrase from Red Dwarf. In the parlance of the hills, he needs killin'.
Now, as to questions of strategy, I beg you to consider these points:
1) Let's say for the pure sake of argument that this is a war waged for the political gain of the man in the White House. Fine. That, I would say, is a good thing because election time is coming up. At least in my mind, that means they ain't gettin' paid by the hour on this one. No, this is going to be quick, overwhelming and brutal. Why, you ask? Because that way, Dubya can get the maximum political heft out of having a successfully concluded war under his belt in time for the primaries. Plus, it will give him time to mend fences with the international community. It's a win-win situation: either he makes (even more of) a colossal fool out of himself and loses the election thereby, or if he wins, we get four more years of Stupid President Tricks and he's out the door and good riddance to him.
2) I keep hearing the knuckle-dragging moronic citizenry saying "Nuke the place and turn it into one giant glass parking lot". Such people are so incredibly stupid they make Jello look intelligent, so that is all I propose to say about such fools here.

Date: 2003-01-27 03:19 pm (UTC)I do not have a bone in my body that would allow me to smile upon the death of another human being. I did not join the military to 'go blow shit up' or 'go kill stuff.' I joined because I felt that the defense of our country is more important than my own life. I could put my life on hold to serve. Do I want to go to war? Absolutely not, it scares the crap out of me. Do I believe it's necessary? Absolutely. No doubt in my mind.
Is this a war fought for re-election purposes? Anyone would be a fool to disagree with that idea entirely, but I think it's less of an issue than most would believe it to be.
Is this a war for oil? If it is, I can live with that.
Is this a war to remove a genocidal tyrranus dictator who would nuke us without a second thought?
...Duh.
There are people in the military who joined for war purposes. They want to go kick some ass or create a "Lake America" in the shape of Iraq. But you'd find, amongst the military, that a higher percentage are scared of war... what human wouldn't be? But despite that fear, we are ready, and willing, to do what is necessary.
