I've got a file that says it's an mp3 but it apparently isn't. I'd love to be able to play it, but WMP says the file format isn't what it says it is. How can I find out what the file's true format is?

rename it to a .txt file, it's going to give you a warning about changing the file type. then open the file. "In theory" the first few lines should have some file info

Yup... though you don't really have to rename it, just open it with notepad.

My MP3s seem to start with "ID3", though I've run most of them through MusicBrainz retagging and iTunes so that might have had an effect.

If you can't figure it out, post an URL and let the rest of us hack on it a bit.

Thanks, dude. Turns out even that program can't figure out what the heck it is so I have to reluctantly conclude that what I've gotten hold of is some bum mp3s. Useful proggie for the future, though.
