I have put up with them using "Revolution" in a shoe commercial. I have put up with them using the overture from "Tommy" in an antacid commercial. But I draw the !_)@*#& line at using "Blitzkrieg Bop" on a AT&T Wireless commercial.

How did you feel about "Motorbreath" being used for a car commercial?

It's almost as bad as the day Aerosmith did an ad for The Gap.

Joey Ramone's paean to Maria Bartaromo (sp?) was cool - but I don't think he'd intended it to be construed as license for a cell phone company to use his songs.

As a matter of fact, I think Joey's spinning in his grave is providing enough power to keep Times Square nicely lit at night.

Do you know whose fault that is?

You couldn't blame John Lennon or the Beatles for Nike's "Revolution", for instance, since it was Michael Jackson who owned the rights to that song (IIRC).

the worst I think they've done is "Go" by Tones on Tail used in a "Starburst" commercial... :P

I just have to think there are devious subversive minds down in the PR/ad agencies who actually *read the entire lyrics* for a song, and know that the originals largely contradict the messages of the Bowdlerized commercial versions. And that the familiarity with the tune will lead more people to listen to the original.

But then, I have been accused of being an optimist.
