Okay, that's it.

There is a crack in the smegging foundation. I know this because the past two times it's rained the carpet gets sopping wet *only* right under where I set my feet when I'm at the computer. Therefore it's time to pack up tents and move unless Herself wants to put in money to: fix the foundation, replace carpet (that would have to be taken up to fix the foundation), get a new heater/AC unit, fix the electrical problems, get a plumber in (downstairs bathroom sink utterly refuses to drain despite every single plumbering goop I can get at the store) and shore up the little slope behind the house and underneath the back porch that is swiftly eroding away and I'm deathly afraid at some point in the next few years will peel the back of the house clean off like a bloody great boiled egg.

So what I want to hear from those of you who care to do so is a sales pitch for where you live and why Doc (and quite possibly Herself and the kittehs) should move there. Please don't think I've got some kind of exalted opinion of myself or anything, I'm just looking to cheer myself up a little and get information on various places that could be possibilities. There are already two leading contenders - Austin and Seattle. I just thought this might be fun.

Well, you'd be doing your part to keep Austin weird. :)

True, young Greenslade, true.

Oh SNAP HArd choice!

Austin is a "party town" with a lot of the Texas underground heading there for music. I even ran across an Austin web radio station being played in Canada.
However Seattle is indeed a hot contender.

I do not know the Pros and Cons completely for Seattle. My friends [livejournal.com profile] catholicsin and [livejournal.com profile] heresyoftruth just moved there. heresyoftruth found a punk flea market.
She cites the medical community can at times be a bit "old boys" network and can cover for each other's incompetency, but the public transit system seems to be VERY GOOD. Definately get her opinion since she is new to that area.

If you come to Texas I can give you some cons as well as pros:

The Public transit system sucks hard balls in the Dallas-FortWorth area and Houston is still flooded with people from New Orleans. Austin, I couldn't tell you.
Houses are cheaper here but you have to check for foundation damage everywhere because of Texas soil. An empty house during a drought can come with a lot of problems if there isn't an automated sprinkler system to keep the soil moist.

Our drinking laws are fucked up here in Texas.
You can buy hard liquor until 9pm.
You can buy Beer and Wine up until midnight.
You can drink in a bar until 2am
You cannot buy any alcohol before noon on Sunday.
No open containers (even resealed) in the car.

Well, I would, but I'd move myself if I could..so....

[identity profile] screamingshiva.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I would say phx but its just not that cool ... its hot... it rarely rains... it never snows... there are 2 seasons.... fucking cold and boiling. sometimes in the same day. . . cancer lives here too and I don't know how well you two would do in the same city together. . . there isn't much of a scene ... but there is a resemblance of one. . . theres a ton of mormons and no culture ;) the busses suck... the rail is construction hell... why do I live here anyway?

The universe couldn't handle that much geek in one place and not call it a convention.

*FALLS OFF CHAIR AND DIES OF GIGGLES*

LIES

[identity profile] katharinakatt.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He lies! There's no 'fucking cold' in Arizona. NEVER EVER!

There's hot, and not so hot.

I've worn a t-shirt on Christmas. Seriously... no 'fucking cold' goes to the city that exists on the surface of the sun.

The problem with Phoenix is that you have to have A/C and a high electric bill every summer. Winter isn't too bad.

There's lot's of jobs there, but rent is a bit high. Of course, you could probably get a house pretty cheap right now. (snicker)

more to add

[identity profile] katharinakatt.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He is right about there being no scene.

Not sure about the mormons... maybe on HIS side of town. hehe. But I think he has a hippy problem on his side of town too. lol On my family's side of town it's more about dealing with the Mexicans who seem to have exploded in population like rabbits on Viagra. Bring Pesoes(sp). LOL

There's a good 'ROCKY' scene but you might have to drive a long ways to see it. Some are dedicated enough, most aren't.

The buses ..yeah they suck mostly.. but I think that my complaints had more to do with their a/c on them, and how long I had to wait in the blistering heat with my pale skin.

Oh.. and you live there because you haven't moved yet! heh

[identity profile] bfly.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Because we'd love to have you for our neighbor!

Uh, seriously, let's see. Austin has a great music scene and a big tech community. Eklektikos on KUT. A decent population of funky people, and a lot of overlapping between the various communities and interests. A small, fun SF convention supported by an active fan base. Lots to see and do. Texas has no income tax. On the down side, the summers are hot as hell, we left the gate open and a lot of yuppies got in, the traffic sucks, and the sales tax has to compensate for the lack of income tax.

If you ever want to come down for a scouting trip, you've got places to stay!

[identity profile] idiomagic.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason to move to Austin is because I am here, as is Eowyn Kitteh.
I've lived in Seattle...it was fairly cool for the first six months, then I spent the next year saving up enough money to get the hell out. Of course, that was back in 90-91, so ymmv.

[identity profile] docwebster.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Your good self and a certain fuzzbutt of note are powerful considerations for Austin, yes.

[identity profile] shadowcat48li.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
move to Bloomington, you could be the closest to Normal you will ever be.
and you would be closer to even more crazy folks you already know.

Yeah.. not much chance of recommending anywhere here...
although it would be nice if we were at least on the same continant, I doubt that'll happen this decade at least.

[livejournal.com profile] anahata56 has a lot of good to say about her patch outside of Philly...

[identity profile] lizzibabe.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to see you, but I can't recommend the NoVA/DC area because the housing prices are so damn high. otherwise, i'm having a ball hitting the free museums, and i'm finding some cool bands to go see. and there's a RHPS cast right close to me, The Tranny Concubines.

[identity profile] hfcougar.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Similarly, I can recommend many things about Boston, except the traffic and the housing costs... especially the housing costs. And the gas bills.

[identity profile] dreamline.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I live in Seattle :)

I BELONG here.

[identity profile] katharinakatt.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhm.. didn't you just decide to BUY the place? (confused)

[identity profile] docwebster.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but my point is with all that going on why put the money on this place when it could be put toward another that isn't a "fixer upper"?

[identity profile] docwebster.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Money hasn't been put down yet, so it's still eligible to go anywhere I want it. After all this stuff that needs repairs mess, though, I'm reconsidering the many virtues of renting.

[identity profile] katharinakatt.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Renting is always a problem when the renter leaves, or you can't find one... or in the sometimes occurance where they destroy the place.

[identity profile] ex-flexible.livejournal.com 2008-04-04 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Tucson is not as hot as Phoenix and rents are cheaper.

Also, those who appreciate cool music get to have their own (community supported, even) radio station: http://www.kxci.org.

All that said, however, I've also lived in Austin. And there is much that is excellent in Austin --the live music scene is unmatched.
