Is there a way to get XP to ignore a given drive without going through opening the case and physically disconnecting it?

I'm not sure about the boot drive. If it's
not
the boot drive, you can go into Device Manager and disable it. Never tried, so I don't know what other effects it'll have.

Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager -> View Hardware and Devices
When you get there, click on Disk Drives then right click on the drive you want to disable and choose Disable. That should do it...
