What in the world do you do when your citizens keep complaining about it being too crowded and your area to put in new cities is limited or nonexistent?

In the city control box there's an icon just to right of the one that maximizes the city's production of Great People. That button sets things to slow growth. Assign additional specialists until you get a growth rate of Starvation! The population will drop to a level the locals are happy with.

If you have a city this isn't working for, build the Globe Theater there. It removes all unhappiness from the population

Just now Montezuma decided to declare war and send his fleet of Frigates across the sea to take me down.

Problem.

I was/am sliiiiiiiiiightly more advanced tech wise and head a fleet of Destroyers waiting for him. Nighty night, Monty's ships.

I just took out Genghis Khan with Modern Armor and Attack Helicopters. He had Macemen and Longbows.

You can also go to war, or (iirc) generate workers to eat population. Or, if you have the right mod pack, I think (at least in one) you can sacrifice citizens to your evil god for a blessing on your city. :)

I'm playing Next War Epic that ships with it, as it happens. Taking down Montezuma with a brace of Assault Mechs and Dreadnought Tanks is so fulfilling.

Also, temples and theaters remove an unhappy citizen; wonders such as Women's Suffrage also remove unhappy citizens. Other governments such as democracy do this, but at the cost of having them get irate when you're at war or have too many units far from home. If you have military units that are supported by a city on the other side of the map, look at basing them in a city closer to the deployment zone. Be careful, though, because if the new base can't afford to support them, they will disband! Of course, if they're just sausage for the meat grinder, you may have time to throw them at your enemy in true Soviet style before they disband.

... I guess my play style is shining through a bit more than I intended...
