And me to that list. For me it comes from the great football movie The Replacements about the oddball players brought in during a players strike. After scoring the winning touchdown in their final game against a team of pros Who crossed the line, Heroes plays as the players look around the stadium, basking in their final moment of glory. Then Gene Hackman gets the best monologue ever.
"When the Washington Sentinels left the stadium that date, there was no tickertape parade, no endorsement deals for sneakers or soda pop, or breakfast cereal. Just a locker to be cleaned out, and a ride home to catch. But what they didn't know, was that their lives had been changed forever because they had been part of something great. And greatness, no matter how brief, stays with a man. Every athlete dreams of a second chance, these men lived it."
Doc's specifically thinking of the rendition from the Freddie Mercury tribute concert, where Bowie stops in the middle, drops to one knee, and starts reciting the Lord's Prayer. As long as I've been away from the Church, that still makes me bawl.
I was fortunate enough to see Peter Gabriel cover it, backed with full string section, in April of this year. I really love his cover - you can hear it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwbTWgkfbNs
