Reminds me of a man I knew at the Humboldt Brass Chamber Music workshop. He was in the navy on submarines and he carried his trombone with him wherever he was posted, stashing it in the torpedo tube. Whenever they went into combat, the captain of the boat would send someone to find him to get that horn out of the torpedo tube so they could load actual ordnance. To practice he took it back to the engine room where it was noisy anyway. He died earlier this year, and I wish I had one more chance to talk to him. He didn't do the workshop last year because he was playing six nights a week and was just too busy to take a week off to come up and play at the workshop. What a wonderful man.
