So I hear the Powers That Be are considering bringing back the draft. Are they so out of touch with reality they think it'll be any more popular or work any better than the last time we were in a vastly unpopular war?

I do hope nobody decides to prattle to me about patriotism. My great grandfather was in WW1, my grandfather Irving was in a tank at D-Day, my father was in Thailand the day I was born, and I myself would have been a United States Marine (no, I'm not kidding) if that blessed football game my senior year hadn't occured and perforce turned my left kneecap partially into kindling.

I love America. But what galloping neo-conservatism is turning the "United" States into is rather an unpleasant place.

Where did you hear this? Haven't heard it on any of my sources, and I don't mean the mainstream crap.

Well, if it does come back, that means those of us who missed the sixties will get a second chance...

Insane. Utterly insane. As you say, the neo-cons are completely out of touch.

Not a poke at anyone here in particular replying to this post.... but ya know I've come to think of "don't worry it'll never happen" as one of the most dangerous phrases I can think of... especially when dealing with government, or politics, it's so easy to see something as sooooooo completely insane, unthinkable, that "geez that could never happen", and sit on our hands and do nothing. But, sitting on our hands and doing nothing is EXACTLY how insanity like that happens. Everyday.

Now, that's just idiotic. the strength of our army is the fact that each and every one of those folk out there chose to put their precious lives and bodies between the enemy and America. i wouldn't want to be defended by anyone who didn't choose to be there.

I wonder if the Army could use Civvie radio personnel? You know, for Armed Forces Radio.

I'll convert you to a ham yet.

(Ham radio operator, that is. Otherwise it'd be redundant. OHO!)

With as many vets that are in the *fleet reserve* and what ever the Army/AirForce version of same is...wanting to come back on active duty..they don't need a draft...just call us old bastards up...we'll go.

Show these pups how it's done, eh? *grin*

Think they could use a civvie in Armed Forces Radio? I'm 38 with a bad back and bum knee, so I'm right out for actual recruitment, but I just wondered.
