Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said Sheehan was charged with unlawful conduct, a misdemeanor.

That "unlawful conduct"? "Referring to the number of Americans killed in Iraq, the shirt read, "2,245 and how many more?''"

That's right, folks - this miserable sack of sputum and his thought police just made it illegal to wear anti-war t-shirts. I can't wait to see how the scumsucks and their apologists spin this to even vaguely try and explain how wearing a t-shirt is illegal. I mean, to heck with that whole free speech thing, right?

I could be wrong, but...

As sick as the whole thing makes me, I think there is a law about demonstrating inside the Capitol building. I think it falls under the same situation as campaigning past a certain point at the polls.

Oh, come on. There's a big damn difference between wearing an anti-war shirt and demonstrating. They damn well know it, too, but God forbid anyone dare to question. These people make me sick.

Too damn true. Thing is, I've seen people denied access to the polls until they removed the campaign button they had on. I'm pretty sure this falls under the same thing, given the nature of the business that goes on in the capitol building.

I had heard initialy that she had tried to unfold an anti-war banner. I wish someone had unfolded SOME sort of banner. Check out [livejournal.com profile] revbri and [livejournal.com profile] amnormand's LJ's for photos of the protest outside or the Capitol.

What she did did not constitute the realm of speech, but protest and action. She broke a regulation stating no demonstrations in the Capitol building, hence, she gets arrested.

Frankly, what she did will make her look like a fool, which is exactly what the war opposition doesn't need.

I think THAT'S the best point in this whole thing. Time and a place - this wasn't it. ALL she did was hurt the cause more. Every single press agency and reporter in the US knows who she is. Her very presence there in a nice dress or business suit would have generated far more positive buzz for her and her cause than her anti war shirt... that now just puts the anti war sect two steps back.

Thanks for this, Doc. So far, the only mention on my flist other than yours is the person ranting on about how "arrogant, stupid, and unAmerican" Sheehan is.

What's next? Are all of us who are not Hetero-guntoting-Christian-Republican-missionary position-warloving-Jesusfreaks going to be gathered up and burned at the stake? Certainly seems like we're headed in that direction...

Her action was in poor taste, and if there is a regulation against protest inside the capitol, then the arrest does not distress me. However, if there is no regulation against protest inside the capitol, then she has my sympathy. But, make no mistakes, that *was* a protest.

Wow.

Very reminiscent for me of Iron Jawed Angels (http://www.hbo.com/films/ironjawedangels/synopsis/index.html), and what happened when they dared to silently protest outside of the white house gates/ question the president during a time of war.

They want us to sit down and shut up. Should we give them what they want? HELL NO.
