They showed up at 9 and wouldn't even let me go get the money. We're at an Econolodge until we can find a place, and the cats are with Animal Control. Heartsick doesn't even begin to cover it.

I'll talk about it when I can summon the energy to, but as of right now we're homeless. Victims.. aren't we all?

Fuck.

Well, at least you have money for a security deposit on your next place, and you won't have to deal with these asshats again.

So they weren't interested in the cash at all

They did not legally throw you out. Get your shit, do not put your cats there and get another apartment with that cash.
Do not fight for that place. If you had the cash today and handed it over, you would be in this exact position in less than an month when they came up with something else.

Remember this?
You Must Start Keeping Track of Your Money.
Get an accounting book.

Start with the amount you have received from donations. Do not count ANY OTHER money. Do not count on Future Money no matter how in the bag it is. I was stuck behind $250 for months because I counted on an "in the bag deal".

You are not starting from Zero, you're starting from 3k.

Hell a piece of graph paper. Just keep track of what go paid how much and and when.
I'm might be staring down the barrel of a lawsuit myself over $17 a collection agency that I never paid money to insists I pay despite my handling it with the electric company. I am depending on the automatic paper trail of the bank for that.

Pick yourself up by your bootstraps.
You've already been kicked before - you know how it feels.

Get Up.

This is an opportunity. Everything seems totally uncertain, but out of that something good could happen. Let your money do the talking - take the $3,400 and go out tomorrow and find yourself a brand new place. We are all here for you. Don't think of being homeless, think of moving to a new place, and how your lawsuit can now enter punitive damage and big amounts of money levels.

Sorry I missed the call this morning - I'm afraid there's less than nothing I can do financially. Is there something I can do to help with the cats? Please realize anything I do needs to be in the very short term foster or transportation variety of help - My landlord, understanding about pets as he may be, really didn't want me fostering, and I can't afford the $500 per pet deposit to take on extras for any real length of time. Give me a text or an email (phone really isn't a great way to communicate with me generally) at ladyfae at gmail if I can help.

If they didn't have a court order to evict you, they couldn't force you out.

By not acting and not refusing them, you have done this to yourself. You are responsible for your own actions, and because you have wilfully allowed your rights to be disregarded, you have put yourself here.

This is your own fault. Fix it by becoming aware of your rights, or continue being walked on by everyone around you.

Yeah, that's utterly useful right now. There's a time and a place, and this is *not* it. Dear ghods, talk about kicking someone while he's down.

Oh hon. I'm so sorry. This is an utterly ridiculous situation that needs lawsuits and yelling and lots of trouble made for the people who are doing this for you. But none of that helps tonight.

Good thoughts and vibes on the way.

Love you very much.

I know an incredibly good tenants' rights attorney here in Boston. I can ask him if he knows anybody in your neck of the woods.

Something to think about - they were demanding cash, so there would be no paper trail. Given their previous behavior, the odds that they would try this kind of treatment on you again, had you paid cash, would have been considerable. And you have already been through too much bad treatment with them.

I know that this is terribly stressful right now. But being away from these people will be better for you in the long run.

May you find your way to a safe, affordable and comfortable place, instead.

The demand for cash is notable there. Lots of other forms of payment have instant clearance too.

Doc, you have my sympathies. I hope your bank has all of the appropriate records and can prove the landlord was mistaken, which will help in civil court. If they show that they screwed up, I hope your bank has the humanity to help you given the extreme circumstances their mistake put you in.

Please, talk to a lawyer or the local housing authorities. The fact that they claim they weren't paid in spite of deductions from your account by the bank system that they recommended, demanded cash in a hurry, and threw you out with little notice smells very, very fishy.

If I can help, let me know.

I've heard of the near-eviction, or eviction-staying 'cash' policy. . .lived in a building where it was written into the application and rental agreement - BUT they ALSO accepted money orders and certified cheques in such situations.
